Overview
Intestinal failure, secondary to short bowel, dysmotility or malabsorptive syndromes, is frequently managed with Parenteral Nutrition (PN). It is estimated that there are between 25,000 to 50,000 cases of long-term parenteral nutrition (PN) patients in the United States. Besides the enormous financial implications, chronic PN affects every aspect of a patient’s life, regardless of age. Chronic PN may also lead to other problems such as liver failure, central line infections, problems with venous access and dehydration.
Why Northwestern Memorial
The team at Northwestern Memorial's Kovler Organ Transplantation Center has developed a program that brings together all the necessary components to treat the intestinal failure patient through specialized nutrition, medical and surgical strategies.
Multidisciplinary Approach
Our multidisciplinary team of experts, including gastroenterologists, surgeons, nurses, dietitians, infectious disease specialists, stoma therapists, interventional radiologists, psychiatrists, social workers and others, work together to manage patients with intestinal failure through rehabilitation or transplantation.
Benefits of our Comprehensive Program
- Manage nutritional failure through nutrition, medical and surgical strategies
- Intestinal rehabilitation should reduce the need for intestinal transplantation
- When appropriate, intestinal transplantation can be offered alone or as part of a multi-organ transplantation
- Multidisciplinary collaboration among physicians and surgeons who are recognized leaders of intestinal diseases
