Comprehensive Epilepsy Center

The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital is designated a Level 4 referral center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. This designation certifies that the Comprehensive Epilepsy Monitoring Center provides the highest level of medical and surgical diagnostic and treatment options for epilepsy patients.

Together with the advanced resources of Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the Department of Neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, the Northwestern Comprehensive Epilepsy Center provides epilepsy services in one location.

The Northwestern Comprehensive Epilepsy Center offers:

  • Outpatient consultation with an epilepsy and seizure specialist

  • Specialized expertise in all aspects of epilepsy, including women’s health

  • Inpatient video EEG monitoring with around-the-clock supervision to determine the exact seizure type

  • Pre-surgical evaluation including:

    • Wada and neuropsychological testing
    • Functional magnetic resonance imaging
    • Positron emission tomography
    • Single photon emission computed tomography
    • Magnetoencephalography
  • Epilepsy surgery for patients whose seizures are not controlled with medications.

Who Should Visit our Center?

  • Patients who continue to have uncontrolled seizures for more than one year despite medication treatment

  • Patients who experience unpleasant side effects with current medications

  • Patients who have questions regarding their epilepsy diagnosis

  • Women with epilepsy who have questions regarding how seizures relate to hormonal fluctuations, pregnancy, breastfeeding or menopause

Do I Need a Referral?

A referral from your primary care physician or neurologist is not required but is preferred to better address your needs and facilitate communication between all of your healthcare providers. A member of our staff can assist you in contacting your referring physician.
