No Distance Too Far
“We have to make this work,” said Ruben Medellin, a desktop support analyst II with Information Services. A patient was slipping into the last stages of life just as her daughter was about to give birth to twins at another hospital. Medellin was called in to see if technology could bring the family together one last time. Working quickly, he was able to arrange a video conference through laptop computers and the first-time grandmother was able to spend time with her daughter and see her newborn grandchildren. Medellin helped create a lasting memory for the family that was a source of comfort. The patient died the next day.
Only six percent of the nation’s hospitals have earned Magnet status, the gold standard for nursing excellence and quality care. Research shows Magnet hospitals report fewer patient falls, less medication error, lower mortality and higher patient and family satisfaction. Magnet hospitals tend to have lower nursing turnover and improved nurse work environment. Northwestern Memorial Hospital was awarded Magnet recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center in 2006.
