Chicago -

More than 750 volunteers contributed to Chicago’s largest day of community service

For the third consecutive year, Northwestern Medicine® displayed its strong commitment to the community by sending the largest team of volunteers to participate in the annual Chicago Cares Serve-a-thon. This year, 758 employees, physicians, friends and family members from Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation and Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital comprised the largest team in the history of the 19-year event.

“We are proud to support Chicago Public School students each year through the Chicago Cares Serve-a-thon,” said Daniel Derman, MD, vice president of operations at Northwestern Memorial and president of Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group. “The great representation of volunteers from our Northwestern Medicine family is a testament to the dedication of our employees and physicians during the city’s largest day of service.”

Volunteers from Team Northwestern Medicine helped transform six locations on the city’s south and west sides including two sites in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, Ryerson Elementary School and the Kelly Hall YMCA. The Kelly Hall YMCA is also a partner in Northwestern Medicine’s Diabetes Collaborative, which is dedicated to providing trusted health information on diabetes management and prevention. In addition to brightening Chicago Public School hallways and playgrounds with fresh paint and murals, benches and student cubbies were built from scratch. Flowerbeds were also weeded, mulched and planted to beautify the exterior of the locations. The work completed will positively impact over 18,000 students in the Chicagoland area.

“We know that there are lots of components to improving health beyond the traditional things like blood pressure screenings and diabetes education,” said Derman. “A safe place for kids to come and play after school and in the summer also adds to the health of a community.”
