Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group Opens Convenient Care Clinic
Center provides same-day appointments for non-emergency illnesses and injuries
An unexpected cold, flu or other minor illness can be a real nuisance, creating a domino effect that may include sick days, alternate childcare or time away from daily activities. When a person gets sick, there is one goal – to get better immediately. Unfortunately, finding time for a visit to the doctor can often prove challenging due to conflicting schedules, difficulty scheduling an appointment, or the lack of a relationship with a primary care physician. To provide patients with immediate access to quality healthcare for minor illnesses, Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group has opened a Convenient Care Clinic. Located across from Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s Galter Pavilion, the clinic provides quick access to hospital-affiliated healthcare through call ahead, same day appointments. Convenient Care at the Center for Integrative Medicine and Wellness is the first hospital-affiliated convenient care clinic in the downtown area.
“A significant number of people don’t have a primary care physician,” said Melinda Ring, MD, medical director at Northwestern Memorial’s Center for Integrative Medicine and Wellness. “As a result, many patients allow symptoms to go untreated, or seek care at a hospital emergency department for non-emergency related illnesses. Convenient Care offers a better alternative through same-day appointments with trusted physicians and nurse practitioners,” added Ring.
Doctors and nurses at Convenient Care treat a wide-variety of non-threatening medical conditions ranging from symptoms associated with cold and flu, to mild allergic reactions, pink eye and headaches. The clinic also offers annual physicals and preventive care health screenings.
“Our clinic is designed to serve the many patients that work, live and visit downtown Chicago, by providing easy access to medical treatment. The sooner a patient is seen, the sooner they can get on the road to recovery and return to their work and home obligations,” said Catherine Cheng, MD, internal medicine at Northwestern Memorial’s Center for Integrative Medicine and Wellness.
Keri and Matt Sculte were visiting Chicago from Manchester, Iowa when Keri began feeling sick. The concierge at her hotel told them about Convenient Care. “The staff was very nice and professional. Dr. Stracks asked a lot of questions and walked us through the whole process. It was a much better experience than any other same-day care center we have been to and I would certainly return again,” said Keri.
Cheng also reminds patients that regular check-ups and preventive health screenings play an important role in managing one’s overall health, and encourages patients to establish a relationship with a primary care physician. “If a patient does not have a primary care physician, we will happily refer them to someone or encourage them to return for a well-visit in the future,” adds Cheng.
Convenient Care at the Center for Integrative Medicine and Wellness does not accept walk-in appointments. Instead, patients are asked to call and schedule a same-day appointment, which are offered in 15 minute increments throughout the day. This allows patients to be treated quickly upon arrival, eliminating the long wait times that are often associated with walk-in clinics. Appointments are available Monday through Thursday between the hours of 7 a.m.-5 p.m. and Friday 7-11 a.m. The clinic is located in the Avenue Hotel Office Tour, located at 150 East Huron St., Suite 1100, adjacent to the hospital.
