Nursing

As a leading academic medical center, Northwestern Memorial Hospital is committed to enhancing professional growth initiatives for its nurses. Philanthropy helps the hospital attract and retain talented nurses who are dedicated to providing the highest quality of care to their patients. To recognize  Northwestern Memorial's nurses for their dedication and excellence and to support ongoing education, donors enable an array of nursing professional development programs, certification courses and research projects. These initiatives have helped to distinguish Northwestern Memorial’s nurses as leaders in their profession. The hospital’s staff nurses serve as clinical instructors and preceptors for significant numbers of nursing students and new graduate registered nurses. Collaborative partnerships with colleges and universities throughout the Chicago area contribute to a dynamic teaching and learning environment at the hospital. Currently, more than 250 undergraduate and graduate nursing students develop their skills at Northwestern Memorial each term.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital received Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center in June 2006, and was redesignated for another four years in December 2010.

Magnet status is awarded to organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing practice, exemplary quality outcomes, and an environment that fosters shared leadership and decision-making.
