Orthopaedics
Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery provides outstanding, comprehensive care for patients with a variety of bone, muscle and joint conditions. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report ranked Northwestern Memorial’s orthopaedics program 22nd in the nation.
The hospital’s orthopaedic surgeons specialize in total joint replacements, the diagnosis and treatment of sports-related injuries and the complex care of spinal injuries and deformities including scoliosis. Experts provide additional specialization in the treatment of a broad range of spinal conditions, hand and upper extremity conditions, and problems of the foot and ankle. Orthopaedic oncology is a specialty area of growing focus and is supported by a multidisciplinary medical team. Physicians are working on promising research and developing innovative treatments for patients diagnosed with bone and muscle cancers.
As part of an initiative at Northwestern Memorial to protect and improve bone health for people of all ages, orthopaedic surgeons identify and treat patients with osteoporosis. They strive to reduce a patient’s risk of incurring osteoporosis-related fractures and collaborate with their colleagues in other medical disciplines such as geriatrics, endocrinology, rheumatology and hospital medicine to address the prevalence of osteoporosis among both women and men. This broad-based effort to promote long-term bone health also involves educating the public about osteoporosis risk factors, prevention and the many modern means of treating this potentially disabling disease.
