The Emergency Department at Northwestern Memorial Hospital offers round-the-clock emergency and trauma care to more than 84,000 patients per year. It is a Chicago-based academic medical center serving the city and state as a Level 1 trauma system, which is the highest level of trauma center designation offered by the American College of Surgeons.

The emergency department has the highest capabilities, and it serves complex tertiary care patients (with special intensive care, equipment and specialists) in addition to serving members of the local community and Chicago visitors from all over the world.
