Surgeons at Northwestern Memorial are also performing the EsophyX procedure, an incisionless fundoplication procedure through the mouth to treat Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).
During a fundoplication procedure, the top part of the stomach (the “fundus”) is wrapped around the esophagus and sutured in place. The wrap acts as a valve to keep stomach acid from moving up into the esophagus, which is the problem with GERD. The EsophyX offers all of the advantages of traditional minimally invasive techniques without skin incisions.
