Northwestern Comprehensive Epilepsy Center Recognized with Level 4 Designation by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers
Patients receive highest level of medical and surgical care through multidisciplinary approach
The Northwestern University Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital has been recognized as a Level 4 epilepsy center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC). Level 4 centers have the professional expertise and facilities to provide the highest level medical and surgical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy.
“Our center helps epilepsy patients manage their disease by offering advanced diagnostics, medical management and a full range of surgical options,” said Stephan Schuele, MD, MPH, director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center and assistant professor in neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “We have a multidisciplinary team who all share the goal of finding the right treatments to help each patients control their seizures. The NAEC designation reflects our commitment and ability to provide the most advanced and comprehensive services available for treatment of epilepsy and other seizure disorders.”
The goal of epilepsy treatment is to eliminate seizures without side effects from the therapies. While the disease can often be managed with medications, some patients find that the negative side effects outweigh the benefits. For these complex patients, Northwestern offers surgical options for eliminating seizures. The center also offers specialized care to meet the unique needs of women with epilepsy including an interdisciplinary clinic that allows for patients to consult with specialists in epilepsy, obstetrics and gynecology, family planning and clinical pharmacology all in one visit. Staffed by neurologists, neurosurgeons, psychiatrists, specialized nurses, and certified EEG technologists, the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center brings the full resources of Northwestern Memorial and the Feinberg School to one location.
