Biographical Sketch:

Karen is an advanced practice nurse for the cardiac surgery team at the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute of Northwestern Memorial Hospital. After working with the cardiac surgery patient population in the Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s cardiac surgery intensive care unit for four years as a clinical coordinator, she transitioned into the APN role.

She is a certified Clinical Nurse Specialist (ACNS-BC) and a certified Cardiac Vascular Nurse (CVRN) through the American Nurses Credentialing Center. As a clinical nurse specialist, she specializes in the acute care management of cardiac surgery patients.

Karen is also a member of Sigma Theta Tau, International Honor Society of Nursing, Alpha Sigma Nu Honors Society, and the Preventative Cardiovascular Nurses Association. She received the Koldyke Employee Excellence Scholarship in October 2008. Karen was an independent reviewer for the Cardiac Vascular Nursing Review and Resource Manual in 2009. She was also published in September 2009 in The Clinical Nurse Specialist regarding the role of the clinical nurse specialist in implementing advanced directives.
