Mary Alice joins Northwestern’s Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute with experience as a staff nurse and clinical coordinator in the Cardiothoracic Transplant Intensive Care Unit at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. During this time, specifically from 2008-2010, she was a heart transplant procurement coordinator, giving her additional experience with the Heart Transplant Program at Northwestern.
As a heart transplant coordinator Mary Alice’s responsibilities include coordinating patient care, in conjunction with the surgical and medical heart failure team, for patients with advanced heart failure most likely seeking transplants procedures, processing new patient referrals, educating, and evaluating patients interested in heart transplantation or VAD implantation. She is also responsible for updating the potential recipient's medical record throughout the waiting phase prior to transplant.
Mary Alice also functions in the role of consultant, researcher and resource person for the Heart Transplant Program. Managing the patient's care is coordinated with the physicians and is done in collaboration with social work, dietary, managed care and insurance verification. She is responsible for managing the Medicare certification process for heart transplant and assisting with the Medicare certification process for VAD destination therapy.
Mary Alice received her undergraduate degree in Sports Management from Ohio Wesleyan University and is a graduate of University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Mary Alice participates on many committees for Northwestern, including Magnet Champion, Quality Committee and the Shared Leadership Committee.
