Hearts a Bluhm
“Hearts a Bluhm” is a first-of-its-kind consumer education and awareness campaign launched by Northwestern’s Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute to generate widespread awareness of the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
Throughout February – National Heart Month, the much-anticipated campaign creatively promotes the importance of heart-health with 100 artistically decorated acrylic hearts on display along Michigan Avenue. In addition, each heart is accompanied by a heart-healthy fact designed to encourage conversation about heart disease and prevention and to celebrate the lives saved through proper diagnosis and prevention.
Northwestern partnered with over 50 artists from Columbia College, including faculty, alumni and students and independent artists to embellish the 100 hearts. Each heart, created at the Hearts a Bluhm studio, is a unique and beautiful work of art.

Hearts a Bluhm Day
To show their support for this campaign, Governor Pat Quinn and the state of Illinois and Mayor Richard J. Daley and the city of Chicago have officially proclaimed February 1, “Hearts a Bluhm Day.” The Bears, Blackhawks, Cubs and White Sox organization have each sponsored a heart that can be seen along Michigan Avenue.
Although it may be a bit cold in February in Chicago, a stroll along Michigan Avenue to view the hearts and read the heart-healthy facts will do your heart good!
