Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is a chronic and progressive lung disease that makes it difficult for a person to breathe. The symptoms of COPD are not always obvious and can develop slowly. Ravi Kalhan, MD, MS, describes the signs of COPD and how, in partnership with a healthcare team, it can be managed and treated while maintaining a patient’s quality of life.
Ravi Kalhan, MD, MS, is a pulmonologist on the medical staff at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He also is the director of the Northwestern Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Program and an assistant professor of Medicine and Preventive Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
