Overview
Internal Medicine physicians, often called internists, provide primary care for adults age 18 through the end of life. Internists place a special emphasis on preventive medicine and patient education. They take care of patients even when they’re not ill, and perform services like:
- Annual physicals
- Screenings for common diseases
They are often the gateway to other specialties when their patients need further treatment, and they will refer patients for further consultations when necessary.
At Northwestern Memorial Hospital, board-certified physicians make up our General Internal Medicine Division. Our internists have special interests in the following areas of medicine:
- Cancer prevention
- Heart disease prevention
- Diabetes
- Geriatrics (care for the elderly)
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Sports medicine
- Women’s health
Research & Education
Every internist on staff at Northwestern Memorial also holds a faculty teaching position at the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern Memorial. They are also involved in clinical research trials in the following areas:
- Cardiovascular epidemiology
- Cancer control
- Early detection and prevention of disease
- Mental health concerns in primary care

Our internists have received nationally-prominent awards for their work, including:
- The Robert Wood Johnson Generalist Faculty Scholar Award
- The American Cancer Society Primary Care Career Development Award
Many of our team members have also been selected as outstanding physicians in “Best Doctors in the Midwest.”
