Overview

The Interventional Endoscopy Program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital combines state-of-the-art endoscopic procedures and extensive clinical expertise to aid in diagnosis and management of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, bile ducts, and pancreas.

Interventional endoscopy is a section of gastroenterology focused on providing patients with safe and effective alternatives to more invasive diagnostic testing or surgery. Using advanced technology, board-certified gastroenterologists with specialized training in endoscopy can often remove early cancers and treat more complicated diseases using minimally invasive techniques.

Northwestern Memorial has one of the largest interventional endoscopy programs in the Chicagoland area. The team, led by John A. Martin, MD, Sri Komanduri, MD, MS and Rajesh Keswani, MD, performs nearly 2000 interventional procedures each year In addition, these physicians train future leaders in endoscopy through Northwestern’s Advanced Interventional Endoscopy Fellowship Program.

The interventional endoscopy physicians collaborate with a large, multidisciplinary team, which includes surgeons, oncologists, hepatologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, nurses, dieticians and behavioral therapists. This approach to disease management gives our patients comprehensive care tailored to their individual needs by physicians who are experts in the field. The ultimate goal is to provide timely and excellent patient care.

Types of Endoscopic Procedures

Northwestern’s Interventional Endoscopy Program offers comprehensive endoscopic approaches to enhance diagnosis and management of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, bile duct, and pancreas. These procedures include:

• Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)

• Biliary and Pancreatic Duct Endoscopy—Cholangioscopy and Pancreatoscopy (SpyGlass)

• Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)

• Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR)

• Endoscopic Therapies for Barrett’s Esophagus (Radiofrequency ablation, endoscopic resection)

• Balloon Enteroscopy and Spiral Enteroscopy for Small Bowel Disorders

• Endoscopic Management of Complications after Gastric Bypass Surgery

• Enteral, Esophageal, and Colonic Stenting

• Video Capsule Endoscopy
