Clinic offers kidney and liver services to patients in the suburbs

Northwestern Memorial Hospital transplant physicians have opened a clinic in Joliet, Illinois in response to the growing need to expand access to transplantation services in the south and southwest suburbs. The Northwestern Organ Transplant Clinic will serve potential transplant candidates as well as patients seeking consultations for advanced or complex liver disease, and will minimize the need for patients to make frequent long drives to downtown Chicago for care.

“This clinic provides patients from the region with more convenient access to the option of liver and kidney transplantation.” says Michael Abecassis, MD, MBA, chief of the Division of Organ Transplantation at Northwestern Memorial. “As part of our outreach efforts, we look forward to working with local physicians to coordinate care and make treatment for their patients closer and more convenient.”

The clinic is located at 1124 Essington Road, Joliet, IL 60435 in Rios & Lapinski Plastic Surgery and Dermatologic Institute. The location offers free, convenient parking. The multi-disciplinary transplant team that will see patients includes hepatologist Laura Kulik, MD, in the liver transplant clinic and transplant nephrologist, Lorenzo Gallon, MD, along with transplant surgeons in the kidney transplant clinic.

The liver disease and transplantation program at Northwestern Memorial offers a complete range of medical and surgical interventions to treat complex liver disease. The kidney transplant program offers a variety of innovative treatments such as paired exchanges and desensitization to offer the option of kidney transplantation to more patients.

Northwestern Memorial is a national leader in kidney and liver living donor transplantation. For two consecutive years, the hospital has had the largest living donor kidney transplant program in the country. In 2009 the living donor liver transplant program also ranked among the nation’s highest.

The hospital continues to be the largest and most successful liver transplant program in Illinois, and one of the largest and most successful programs in the Midwest and the United States. Northwestern’s transplant patient and graft outcomes continue to be excellent and compare favorably with local, regional and national statistics.
