Lung cancer surgery is performed to remove cancerous tissue. It is an option to treat lung cancer at stage I and II and sometimes at stage IIIA.
Four Types of Surgery Currently Used :
Wedge resection
Removes a small portion of the lung where the tumor is located and some of the healthy tissue along the edge (margin) of the tumor
Segmental resection
Removes a larger portion of the lung than a wedge resection, but not the entire lobe
Lobectomy
Removes an entire lobe of one lung
Pneumonectomy
Removes one entire lung
