Chicago -
Erica Marsh, MD, recognized as innovator for work in the medical field

Northwestern Medicine® physician Erica Marsh, MD, was among nine innovators honored for their dynamic work in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) by the Chicago Urban League during its annual summit on Tuesday, May 7. Marsh, a reproductive endocrinologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and assistant professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, was recognized for her career achievements and work as the founder of the Northwestern Medicine Scholars Program, which encourages top-performing high school students to consider a career as a physician or medical researcher.

The Chicago Urban League works for economic, educational and social progress for African Americans and promotes strong sustainable communities through advocacy, collaboration and innovation. Each spring, during its annual luncheon, business leaders, community stakeholders and policymakers convene to examine strategies to increase social and economic empowerment and community development through science, technology and math.

“I am honored to receive the Chicago Urban League Innovators Award and am fully committed to helping increase the numbers of young people who are introduced to and pursue careers in science,” said Marsh. “Our goal with the Northwestern Medicine Scholars Program is to give a unique opportunity to inspire and lead students to work towards an advanced degree in medicine or research.”

The Northwestern Medicine Scholars Program offers enriching experiences that enable outstanding high school students at Westingthouse College Prep the opportunity to explore and be better prepared for potential careers in medicine as future physicians and biomedical scientists. Those selected are provided a chance to learn from some of the country’s leading physicians and researchers at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine through mentoring, lectures and other hands-on learning experiences.

“Dr. Marsh is an inspiration to the youth of our Chicago community. She understands that by shaping student’s experiences today, we can impact their future,” said Dean Manheimer, senior vice president of human resources at Northwestern. “With our world class faculty and researchers, this program exposes students at George Westinghouse College Prep to unique learning opportunities that will give them the confidence and knowledge to one day become a physician or medical researcher.”

Marsh has been with Northwestern since 2008. She received her medical degree from Harvard University and completed her residency program in Boston in obstetrics and gynecology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.  She then completed her reproductive endocrinology and infertility fellowship at the Feinberg School of Medicine. Marsh has published numerous articles, reviews and book chapters in the areas of leiomyomas and reproductive endocrinology.
