Updated Statement: August 2010
Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the physicians in the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute provide care that is in the best interest of its patients. The heart valve ring recently mentioned in the press has been cleared for market by the manufacturer through a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) process. The heart valve ring is not considered experimental or investigational as reported.
Patrick M. McCarthy, MD is a world-renowned cardiothoracic surgeon responsible for saving thousands of lives over the course of his career. He has published more than 300 papers and two books on matters related to the heart and heart failure.
The assertions made in the recent news coverage stem from a civil lawsuit brought forward by two patients. We are confident that the issues raised in the lawsuit will be resolved in Northwestern Memorial’s favor.
If you are a patient who received a heart valve ring and have specific questions regarding your care, please contact Janice Knuckey, APN/C-NP at 312-695-0105.
