Overview

"Neuro" refers to the nervous system. Your nervous system is like a computer, it controls your body by way of your brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves, sending commands and retrieving information.

Damage to the components of your nervous system sometimes requires surgery. Neurosurgeons are specially-trained surgeons who treat conditions affecting the brain, spine, peripheral nerves and the arteries of the neck.

The Department of Neurological Surgery is among the nation’s leading centers of neurological care, teaching and research. Some of the programs we are recognized for are:

  • A cerebrovascular program for the surgical and endovascular treatment of stroke, brain aneurysms, brain or spinal vascular malformations, and other blood vessel-related problems

  • The Northwestern Pediatric and Adolescent Neurovascular Disease and Stroke Program
A unique partnership of the neurosurgery programs at Northwestern Memorial and Children's Memorial hospitals to provide comprehensive neurovascular care for  patients ranging in age from infancy through adulthood
