Biography

Dr. Murad Alam is a Professor of Dermatology, Otolaryngology, and Surgery, and Chief of the Section of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Yale University. Dr. Alam completed residency training in dermatology at Columbia University. He subsequently received fellowship training in laser and cosmetic surgery at SkinCare Physicians/Harvard Medical School in Boston, and Mohs micrographic surgery at DermSurgery Associates/Baylor in Houston.

An author of over 100 publications, Dr. Alam is head of the surgical advisory board of Archives of Dermatology, Associate Editor of Lasers in Medical Science, Assistant Editor of Dermatologic Surgery, and a member of the editorial boards of Cosmetic Dermatology, the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, and Skin Therapy Letter. He is series co-editor of the Procedures in Cosmetic Dermatology books, and overall has edited 20 books, including Cosmetic Dermatology in Skin of Color, Requisites in Cosmetic Dermatology, Body Rejuvenation, Non-Surgical Tightening and Lifting, Treatment of Leg Veins, and Evidence-Based Procedural Dermatology.

Dr. Alam is at present on the Board of Directors of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the largest professional society representing this subspecialty in the US. He is also on the Board of Directors of the American College of Mohs Surgery, the premier professional society for physicians who are expert in microscopic skin cancer surgery. For several years, Dr. Alam has been an Advisor to the AMA-CPT Committee that oversees definitions for all surgical procedures in the US, and a Consultant to the General and Plastic Surgery Devices Panel of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He is the past chair of the Sulzberger Institute for Dermatologic Education, and current president of the Blade and Light Society, an organization of volunteer dermatologic surgeons who perform charitable mission work to treat skin cancers and train surgical dermatologists in underserved countries. In 2012, Dr. Alam was awarded a Presidential Citation by the American Academy of Dermatology for his advocacy work to improve patient access to skin cancer surgery procedures.

Dr. Alam’s clinical practice includes the treatment of skin cancer, as well as cosmetic dermatology, and laser surgery. He is also the director of the Northwestern University fellowship training program in Procedural Dermatology, which provides advanced dermatologic surgery training to a select group of board-certified dermatologists.

Dr. Alam’s areas of research interest include clinical outcomes and safety associated with different therapies; he has received research funding from the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery and the Skin Cancer Foundation.
