Biography

Dr. Andrea Birnbaum is an ophthalmologist specializing in uveitis and ocular inflammation at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. As an Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology, Dr. Birnbaum cares for patients with inflammatory conditions that affect the eye and performs complex cataract surgery. She has a comprehensive ophthalmology clinic and is also involved in training residents at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center.

Dr. Birnbaum completed her MD and PhD in neuroscience at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She continued her clinical training, completing both her residency in ophthalmology and fellowship in uveitis at the same institution.

Dr. Birnbaum is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and serves on several educational committees. She is also a member of the American Uveitis Society (AUS), the National Association of VA Physicians and Dentists (NAVAPD), the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), and the Association of Veterans Affairs Ophthalmologists (AVAO). She is a founding member of the Midwest Uveitis Society for Science and Education and serves as Secretary for the organization.

Dr. Birnbaum has given numerous presentations at local and national meetings and has published over 20 peer-reviewed articles, several of which were recognized for their significance in the field uveitis. Her research interests include the diagnosis and management of ocular inflammatory conditions and she has participated in an international multicenter study to evaluate diagnostic criteria for ocular sarcoidosis. She serves as a reviewer for several ophthalmology journals and has published 4 book chapters focused on uveitis.
