Born in the northern coast of Colombia, South America, Dr. Joaquin C. Brieva completed medical studies at The University of the North in his native Barranquilla. He then went to complete his first Dermatology residency at The National University in Santa Fe de Bogota, Colombia.

Dr. Brieva immigrated to the United States in 1988 to pursue further medical training. Dr. Brieva completed his Internal Medicine training at The University of Illinois at Chicago where he was honored both in 1992 and 1993 with the House Staff Award as best resident. Dr. Brieva then completed his second residency in Dermatology at The University of Illinois under the guidance of Professors Lawrence M. Solomon and Iris Aronson.

Dr. Brieva joined the faculty at Northwestern University in 1999 and is 100% committed to medical dermatology. His daily academic activities include Hospital-Based Dermatology as the director of the In-Patient Consult Service and in the out-patient setting, the complex cases consult service.

Dr. Brieva is also highly vested in helping patients afflicted by immuno-bullous disorders and his Pemphigus clinic is recommended by the International Pemphigus Foundation. He collaborated with the team of Dr. Richard Burt and Yu Oyama in the first case reported of autologous stem cell transplant used in the treatment of refractory pemphigus.

Dr. Brieva is certified (1996) and re-certified (2005) by The American Board of Dermatology. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, an active member of the Chicago Dermatological Society, The Illinois Dermatological Society, The Great Lakes Dermatological Society and The Medical Dermatology Society.
