He ran a large heart disease prevention program at the University of Illinois before coming to Northwestern in August 2007.
Dr. Devries has unique training in both cardiovascular disease and in integrative medicine. He attended medical school and completed his internal medicine training at the University of Michigan. He then completed cardiovascular subspecialty training at Washington University. In 2005, he completed a fellowship in integrative medicine at the University of Arizona with Dr. Andrew Weil.

Dr. Devries previously authored the weekly column ""Heart Beat"" in the Chicago Sun-Times, and lectures nationally on prevention of heart disease. He has been elected by his peers as one of the ""Best Doctors in America"". Most recently, he authored a book published in 2007 by Time/Warner, ""What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Cholesterol"".
Dr. Devries has a unique preventive cardiology practice integrating natural and conventional approaches. The focus of his practice is on the evaluation of patients with a strong family history of heart disease, those with cholesterol disorders, and patients who have been intolerant to cholesterol medication in the past. The emphasis is on maximizing non-drug options, although medication is used as required. His practice is limited to issues relating to the prevention of heart disease.
