Benjamin H. Freed, MD is a cardiologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
Dr. Freed specializes in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (diastolic heart failure), pulmonary hypertension, and right ventricular disease.  His research interests include understanding the mechanism behind right heart failure in patients with pulmonary hypertension using non-invasive imaging techniques such as echocardiography (ECHO), and cardiovascular magnetic resonance (MRI).
Originally from the Chicagoland area, Dr. Freed received his Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Biopsychology and Cognitive Science at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.  He received his Medical Degree (MD) at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 2004 and completed his internship, residency, and cardiovascular fellowship at the University of Chicago.  Dr. Freed worked as chief resident at the John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County prior to starting his fellowship and was later selected as chief fellow at the University of Chicago.  Dr. Freed then completed his advanced cardiovascular imaging fellowship at the University of Chicago where he focused on two and three dimensional echocardiography, cardiovascular MRI, and cardiovascular CT.  He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, echocardiography, and nuclear cardiology.
Dr. Freed has received recognition for his teaching, clinical, and research skills.  He was awarded the American Society of Echocardiography Career Development Award and has received several awards for excellence in teaching.  He regularly presents his research at both national and international meetings in the fields of cardiovascular MRI, echocardiography, and pulmonary hypertension.
He is a member of the American Heart Association, the European Society of Cardiology, the American College of Cardiology, and the Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance.  Dr. Freed's bibliography includes over 38 research papers, journal review articles, book chapters, and research abstracts.
