Biography

Dr. Gillespie is the inaugural Director of Interventional Pulmonary Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He joins the faculty from the University of Pennsylvania where he was the Director of the Interventional Pulmonary Fellowship Training Program. At Northwestern he has a dual appointment to Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine and Thoracic Surgery. He is excited to join the vibrant community of medicine at Northwestern and work as a part of a multidisciplinary service to treat patients with possible thoracic malignancies and central airway obstruction.

Dr. Gillespie received a B.A. in English Literature from The College of the Holy Cross in 1994. During his undergrad years he became interested in a career in medicine. He attended the Chicago Medical School and graduated in 2000 as a member of the Alpha-Omega-Alpha honor society. He then pursued his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania from 2000 - 2003 followed by fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania from 2003 to 2006. As a fellow he completed a dedicated year of advanced training in Interventional Bronchoscopy with Dr. Daniel Sterman at the University of Pennsylvania and trained with Dr. Herve Dutau, an international leader in the field of rigid bronchoscopy, in Marseilles, France. Dr. Gillespie was then invited to join the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine where he spent the next four years. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr Gillespie has advanced training in the following techniques: flexible and rigid bronchoscopy; balloon bronchoplasty, endobronchial stent placement (silicon, hybrid and metallic), electrosurgery (including argon plasma coagulation, lasers and cautery tools), endobronchial brachytherapy, photodynamic therapy, endobronchial ultrasound (both convex and radial imaging), navigational bronchoscopy, auto-fluorescence bronchoscopy (LIFE), multiple biopsy tools, percutaneous tracheotomy, and pleuroscopy. His clinical interest includes the treatment of thoracic malignancies, specifically with regard to the application of novel technologies in Interventional Pulmonology to improve the diagnosis and treatment of thoracic malignancies as minimally invasively as possible. He also has extensive experience in the bronchoscopic management of tracheal stenosis and the airway complications associated with Lung Transplantation.

His academic focus is on clinical research and education. He was the principle investigator on a phase III study looking at the placement of bilateral Intrabronchial Valves for the treatment of patients with heterogeneous emphysema. Dr. Gillespie has also been involved in projects aimed to utilize advanced bronchoscopic techniques to improve diagnostic yield of lung nodules and masses, treat diseases such as tracheomalacia and severe asthma as well as banking tissue samples for basic research. As an educator he has a keen interest in simulation based learning. He has been working to develop simulations designed to accelerate the acquisition of advanced bronchoscopic and procedural skills.
