Biography

William S. Gilmer, M.D., Chicago TMS Specialists Medical Director, is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. Dr. Gilmer has specialized in the treatment of depression and bipolar disorders for over twenty years, and has conducted numerous research studies in the development of new treatment approaches for depression.

Dr. Gilmer was an investigator in the multi-center research study leading to FDA clearance of NeuroStar TMS Therapy. He was also the Northwestern University Regional Center Director for the NIMH-Depression Treatment Network, a federally funded research consortium that conducted the STAR*D (Sequenced Treatment Alternatives to Relieve Depression) study, a landmark, multi-center study designed to systematically evaluate treatment options for patients with major depressive disorders.

Prior to founding Chicago TMS Specialists, Dr. Gilmer served as Medical Director for the Asher Depression Center at Northwestern University from 1997 to 2009. Dr. Gilmer's clinical and research interests include the investigation of new pharmacological agents, subtypes of chronic and recurrent depressions, identification of bipolar spectrum disorders, neurocognitive problems in bipolar illness, and factors that influence the course of mood disorders.

Dr. Gilmer has authored or co-authored over 50 scientific papers and published abstracts pertaining to mood disorders, as well as numerous book chapters. He is a frequently invited speaker on the evaluation and optimal management of treatment-resistant depressions, lecturing widely throughout the United States and Canada. Dr. Gilmer served for ten years as scientific advisor to the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) Northwestern Medical Campus Chapter, which he founded in 1999.
