Dr. Hawkins is a Pulmonary & Critical Care Physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in the Department of Medicine, and member of the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation. He is also an active participant in the division’s Interventional Pulmonary Program and a member of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center Thoracic Oncology Program.

Dr. Hawkins completed his internal medicine internship and residency training at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and fellowship training in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. He joined the faculty in the division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine upon completion of training in 2006 and is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Hawkins is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and an active member of the American Thoracic Society and the ATS Section on Thoracic Oncology.

Dr. Hawkins clinical interests are in the multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach to care of patients with a diagnosis or suspected diagnosis of lung cancer. He specializes in the performance of advanced pulmonary diagnostic procedures for chest imaging abnormalities, particularly those related to lung nodules, masses, or abnormal lymph nodes. Procedures and advanced technology of which he has specific expertise include use of navigation bronchoscopy and radial probe ultrasound for assessment of peripheral pulmonary nodules and endobronchial ultrasound bronchoscopy for minimally-invasive assessment of mediastinal lymphadenopathy.

Dr. Hawkins also maintains an active role in the Northwestern University Pulmonary & Critical Care Fellowship Program where he spends time involved in the education and training of future Pulmonary & Critical Care physicians. He has received numerous recognitions for his contributions to education and mentorship from the Department of Medicine and Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine.

Dr. Hawkins’ practice philosophy involves the belief that patients should always feel well-informed regarding the details of their diagnosis and most current treatment options surrounding the plan of care. A successful physician-patient relationship should involve one structured around the development of trust, open communication, and efficient care while helping patients navigate through the difficult and often distressful times of a new diagnosis, abnormal test result, or acute illness.
