Biography

Laurie Keefer, PhD is a licensed clinical health psychologist specializing in behavioral interventions for gastrointestinal disorders. Her laboratory, The Center for Psychosocial Research in GI, is housed within the Division of Gastroenterology at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine. The primary goal of the Center is to promote behavioral self-management for individuals who have gastrointestinal conditions for which there are no cures. Dr. Keefer believes strongly that in conjunction with a caring medical team, strong disease self-management skills can improve symptoms and quality of life over the long term.

Currently, Dr. Keefer's research team works on one of two behavioral treatment outcome studies. The first study is funded through the National Institutes of Health and studies the effects of gut-directed hypnotherapy on relapse rates in Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease.

The second study is funded through the National Institutes of Health and studies the effects of a minimal contact cognitive-behavioral therapy intervention for Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Dr. Keefer received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Albany, State University of New York and completed her residency and fellowship in health psychology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
