Biography

Dr. Merenkov is a psychiatrist on staff at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and an assistant professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. She is also a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in honor of her clinical, leadership, scholarly, and community outreach contributions to the field of psychiatry. She also has been board certified in the field of psychiatry since 1993.

Dr. Merenkov specializes in the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of anxiety spectrum disorders, such as panic, obsessive-compulsive disorders, generalized anxiety disorders, corporate and other professional stress, relationship difficulties, and life cycle transitions. She also has extensive experience in the treatment of depressive disorders. Her previous experience as a psychiatric consultant to Prentice Women's Hospital and the general medical/surgical floors at Northwestern Memorial Hospital provides her with a keen understanding of the medical problems and health issues of both women and men and how those issues interface with mood problems.

Dr. Merenkov has extensive training and experience in providing a comprehensive, integrated, culturally sensitive treatment approach to encompass state-of-the-art individual psychotherapy and medication treatment modes based on current theories and actual clinical evidence. She is an advocate of goal-oriented psychotherapy that includes patients gaining insight about problems and individual strengths but equally focused on their taking action to create meaningful change. Also, Dr. Merenkov maintains a private practice in downtown Chicago. She is known for providing compassionate care to others in an engaging format that promotes mutual dialogue to work on problems.

Dr. Merenkov has previously held a variety of leadership positions in the Illinois Psychiatric Society.  As the former editor of the Illinois Psychiatric Society's newsletter, Mind Matters, she is a published essayist on a variety of topics related to psychiatry, including general practice, effective public education about mental health issues, and the influence of culture on the practice of psychiatry. She is also published in the area of post-partum mood disorders. She has given numerous talks about her original papers on a variety of mood and relationship disorders, psychotherapy, and medication issues to her colleagues, other professional medical and non-medical groups, and the public at large. She has also been involved in promoting mental health education and parity issues in publications, professional meetings, and in cable/PBS/local news television broadcasts. She has been awarded numerous honors for her academic and clinical excellence, writings, and teaching of medical students. Finally, she is also a proud member of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest academic honor society in the United States. She has also been listed as a Top Doctor for Women's Health/Psychiatry, in Chicago Magazine, January 2011 issue.
