Thomas Mustoe, MD is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, both with honors. He went on to train at the Massachusetts General Hospital, the Brigham and Womens Hospital, and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, all Harvard hospitals, where he went to become fully trained and board certified in both otolaryngology and plastic surgery. He went to a faculty position as an assistant and then associate professor at Washington University before coming to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in 1991 as Professor and Chief of Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Mustoe has coauthored over 200 original papers and book chapters with a research interest in wound healing and scarring as it relates to surgery. He has had multiple grants from the government and industry sources over the last 20 years, and maintains an active laboratory. Clinically he has developed a strong interest and expertise in cosmetic surgery of the face, breast and abdomen, as well as extensive experience in breast reconstruction. He has lectured nationally and internationally on topics in aging face aesthetic surgery, rhinoplasty, breast reconstruction and cosmetic surgery as well as abdominoplasty and has written extensively on those topics. He has served on the editorial board of several journals including Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Archives of Surgery, Journal of the American College of Surgeons, and Wound Repair and Regeneration. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Wound Healing Society, and serves on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
