Biography

R. Kannan Mutharasan, MD is a cardiologist in the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and Assistant Professor of Medicine/Cardiology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

His clinical areas of interest include sports cardiology, preventive cardiology, and clinical lipidology.  His laboratory research focuses on using nanotechnology to better understand the function of high-density lipoproteins ("good cholesterol"), with a longterm career goal of improving cardiovascular testing and therapies for patients with cardiovascular disease.

A native of Philadelphia, Dr. Mutharasan's undergraduate studies were completed at Northwestern University, where he graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biomedical Engineering, having spent a year in London studying British history.   He earned his Doctorate in Medicine (MD) at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and pursued his internship, residency, clinical fellowship, and research fellowships at Northwestern University.  He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology.

Dr. Mutharasan regularly presents his research findings at national meetings, and is author on over two dozen manuscripts, book chapters, and research abstracts.  His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Associantion.  He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honors society.  He has won multiple awards for teaching excellence, including the Department of medicine teaching award, and is a leader in undergraduate medical education at the medical school.  Off campus and after hours, Dr. Mutharasan is an avid runner, having run the 2012 Chicago marathon, and also enjoys strength training.
