Biography

Dr. Schwulst is a trauma and critical care surgeon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He is also an assistant professor of surgery in the division of trauma and critical care at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

Dr. Schwulst received his bachelor of arts degree in cell and molecular biology at Northwestern University. He received his doctor of medicine with honors at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine where he was inducted into the Alpha Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha. He then completed his general surgery residency, surgical critical care fellowship, and critical care research fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Dr. Schwulst has received recognition both locally and nationally for his laboratory work in sepsis immunology. He was twice awarded the Samuel A. Wells, Jr. Research Award and was the recipient of the Shock Society’s 2007 New Investigator Award. He is an associate fellow at the American College of Surgeons and is an active member of the Shock Society and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Schwulst has been the lead author of several papers in the Journal of Immunology, Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Shock, Pediatric Emergency Care, and Surgical Clinics of North America. He has also authored book chapters in surgical and critical care texts. Dr. Schwulst also holds a U.S. patent award on methods and compositions for the treatments of sepsis.
