Dr. Skaro is a Solid Organ Transplant Surgeon and the director of the Vascular Access Surgery Program, Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement and associate director of the Kidney Transplant Program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He is also an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Comprehensive Transplant Center at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, and Attending Surgeon at Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Children’s Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Skaro obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Western Ontario in Canada. While at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada, he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy degree, completed postdoctoral research training in transplant immunology, and completed residency in General Surgery. His fellowship in Abdominal Multi-organ Transplantation Surgery was completed at Northwestern University in Chicago.

Dr. Skaro’s clinical interests are: abdominal organ transplantation including adult and pediatric liver, kidney, pancreas and small bowel transplant, laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, and vascular access. Dr. Skaro’s research interests include clinical outcomes and health services research focused on risk prediction and econometrics, decision analytic modeling, and patient safety and the basic science of mechanisms involved in transplant rejection and the induction of transplantation tolerance.

Dr. Skaro is a reviewer for and has authored several articles appearing in high-impact journals including the Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of Hepatology, Annals of Surgery, American Journal of Transplantation, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, and Liver Transplantation. Dr. Skaro serves on regional and national committees and is an active member of the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Transplant Surgeons, Central Surgical Association and the Association of Academic Surgery.
