Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs. Most types of pneumonia are caused by an infection. It can be caused by:

  • Viruses
  • Bacteria
  • Fungi
  • Parasites

Cases of pneumonia can range from mild to life-threatening, but the number and severity of the symptoms do not necessarily indicate the seriousness of the infection. Although pneumonia can infect and cause illness in anyone, it is particularly dangerous for people older than 65 and for those with weakened immune systems.
