Contractual RN nursing hours per patient day (Behavioral Health)

If we don’t have all of our nursing positions filled or we need extra help to provide safe quality care, we may need to temporarily hire RNs who work for agencies outside of NMH. Agency nursing staff must meet compliance and licensure requirements.

While there are no Illinois or national requirements for specific staffing levels, many hospitals measure “nursing hours per patient day” as a way to monitor and improve quality of care and service.

About This Measure

This measure tracks the total number of direct nursing hours worked by RNs in the behavioral health units, who are hired by agencies outside of Northwestern Memorial, compared to the number of patients in the behavioral health units. A lower number may indicate that a hospital provides a higher level of patient care.

Note: Comparison data is not available for this measure.
