Distribution of cardiac surgery procedures
The distribution of cardiac procedures performed at Northwestern Memorial Hospital reflects the overall types of surgeries performed and their complexity.
Isolated cardiac procedures (surgical procedure performed independently of any other procedure) like an isolated coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery are typically not among the more critical or difficult procedures to perform. Valve procedures done with or without an additional cardiac procedure, on the other hand, are thought to be among the more complex cardiac procedures to perform.
The more complex the distribution of procedures, coupled with low mortality rates, may indicate a hospital that provides a higher level of care. Performing more than one procedure per surgery is beneficial to patients because a separate surgery may be avoided.
