Heart Surgery

Surgery refers to a procedure done to remove, repair or replace a part of the body. Some surgeries are done with large incisions (open or traditional surgeries), and some are done with tiny incisions (minimally invasive surgeries).

Cardiac surgery is any surgery involving the heart. When the heart doesn’t work properly, patients will have symptoms that range from uncomfortable to life-limiting. And when heart problems are left untreated, they can lead to death. There are a number of heart diseases and conditions that require heart surgery, including heart valve diseasecoronary artery disease and end-stage heart failure.

Cardiac surgery patients at Northwestern Memorial are treated at the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute. Using a team approach to healthcare, doctors there diagnose and treat heart disease with a wide variety of therapies that sometimes include heart surgery.
