Emergency Department visits, total

Treatment for patients with a sudden onset of symptoms can be provided in the emergency department. For many reasons, patients sometimes use the emergency department for treatment of chronic conditions and symptoms that do not need urgent or emergency care and can be treated by a primary care physician. This can increase the number of patients in the emergency department. A high volume may indicate a lack of primary care availability in the service area.
