Equipment left in the body during surgical procedure

Sometimes, during medical and surgical procedures, surgical equipment or material, like sponges, needles or instruments, may be inadvertently left inside patients' bodies.

When foreign bodies are left inside patients, serious complications can occur. It is every hospital's goal to eliminate this complication.

About this measure

This measure tracks the number of patients who had a procedure and who had material left inside during that procedure.

In this case, a lower number is better.
