Weight loss surgery (Leapfrog Group)

The descriptions for this measure come from source: www.leapfroggroup.org.

Weight loss surgery is performed “on the stomach and/or intestines to help a patient with extreme obesity lose weight. Bariatric surgery is a weight-loss method used for people classified as being morbidly obese.”

“Patients undergoing weight-loss surgery (bariatric surgery) should choose a hospital that has lots of experience with the procedure.”

“Select a hospital with lots of experience and the best results for specific procedures, surgeries or conditions. This is known as Evidence Based Hospital Referral (High risk procedures). Evidence-based hospital referral means making sure that patients with high-risk conditions are treated at hospitals with characteristics shown to be associated with better outcomes.”

“Patients can expect the safest possible surgery at hospitals with low mortality rates or high rates of adherence to clinical practices (or processes) known to improve surgical outcomes…. Another important factor related to better surgical outcomes is volume — how many procedures of a given type a hospital performs each year.”
