Orthopaedics
Orthopaedics is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of injuries and diseases of the body’s musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons (also called orthopaedists) are trained to preserve, investigate and restore the form and function of the extremities, spine and associated skeletal structures.
As people age, their joints, like their hips and knees, often start to degenerate. This breakdown can cause pain and can interfere with normal activities. Hip and knee surgeries can sometimes help.
Hip surgeries are among the most common surgical procedures done at the hospital. Though the surgeries are not complex, there are some possible complications that can arise during and after treatment. Our goal is to avoid those complications.
We strive to provide high quality healthcare to all of our patients. In an effort to reach our goal of Delivering Exceptional Care, we collect data about our patients, their treatments and their outcomes. This data helps us to understand what we’re doing that is working and where we might need to improve our practices for the best possible patient outcomes.
The orthopaedics quality measures we report are:
Outcome
Hip
Safe Care
Hip
- Complications after hip or knee replacement surgery
- Inpatient surgical care: appropriate antibiotic before hip replacement surgery (IHA)
- Inpatient surgical care: timely antibiotic before hip replacement surgery (IHA)
- Inpatient surgical care: antibiotic stopped timely after hip replacement surgery (IHA)
- Readmission rate for hip or knee replacement surgery
Knee
- Complications after hip or knee replacement surgery
- Inpatient surgical care: appropriate antibiotic before knee arthroplasty surgery (IDPH)
- Inpatient surgical care: timely antibiotic before knee arthroplasty surgery (IDPH)
- Inpatient surgical care: antibiotic stopped timely after knee arthroplasty surgery (IDPH)
- Inpatient surgical care: appropriate antibiotic before knee replacement surgery (IHA)
- Inpatient surgical care: timely antibiotic before knee replacement surgery (IHA)
- Inpatient surgical care: antibiotic stopped timely after knee replacement surgery (IHA)
- Readmission rate for hip or knee replacement surgery
- Surgical site infection (SSI) associated with total knee replacement surgery
