Safe Care & Complications

Patients and healthcare experts know that patient care must be delivered safely and accurately in order to minimize complications and improve the likelihood of a good outcome. Some complications are unavoidable even with the best care, but it is clear that many common complications can be prevented.

We measure our ability to prevent complications such as infection, although it is not generally possible to distinguish “preventable” from “nonpreventable" complications with the current national measurement systems. We also measure our prompt intervention to take care of complications when they do occur. 

We also measure nursing practices as part of our “safe care” program, because research has shown that some clinical quality measures are strongly related to good nursing care.
