Weight loss surgery -death within 30 days of surgery

For this measure, we group all types of weight loss surgeries together and average the mortality rate for all weight loss procedures.

Weight loss surgeries require proficiency which may help to prevent clinically significant complications, including death. When these surgeries are performed by a highly experienced surgeon, deaths in the month following gastric bypass surgery are rare, though they do happen. While some patients have higher risks than others, some complications may be avoidable. A lower rate may indicate that a hospital provides a higher level of patient care. Because these events are rare, a small number of cases can affect the rate substantially.

About this measure

Mortality is the statistical measure of the percentage of people who die. This measure tracks the percentage of patients who had any type of weight loss surgery and died within 30 days from the date of surgery.

In this case, a lower number is better.
