Computed Tomography (CT Scan)

A computed tomography (CT) scan is a radiologic exam that combines X-ray and computer technology to produce cross-sectional images of the bones and soft tissues in your body. The images can be compared to the slices of a loaf of bread. Your doctor can look at each slice individually which makes the CT Scan is a highly effective diagnostic tool because it provides important and detailed information.

The Northwestern Memorial CT Department is equipped with some of the most technologically advanced scanners available supporting both the hospital and the Northwestern Memorial Imaging Center at 676 North St. Clair.

Services include:

  • Specialized and routine imaging techniques for body, musculoskeletal, and neuroradiology
  • CT angiography
  • Cardiac and coronary artery CT angiography studies
  • Brain perfusion scans

The length of the exam will depend upon the area to be scanned and specific information needed by your doctors.

Please tell your doctor or the CT staff if you:

  • Are pregnant, might be pregnant, are trying to get pregnant
  • Are allergic to contrast dye or iodine
  • Have known kidney disease
  • Are diabetic
  • Have had a problem with this exam (or other contrast exams) in the past

As is the case with any treatment or test ordered, a discussion with your ordering physician regarding the risk vs. benefits can help determine if the test is right for you.

Radiation Safety

CT scans use X-rays to produce images used for diagnosis and treatment.

At Northwestern Memorial Hospital, we are committed to safe and effective X-ray exposure utilizing the As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) philosophy. This means that your scan will be done with the least amount of radiation possible using sophisticated advanced dose monitoring technology without reducing the diagnostic quality of the exam. All of our scanners have been pre-programmed with the instructions specific for the body part being scanned, which also assists in radiation dose reduction.
