Northwestern’s Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute hosts educational symposium for women

Please join us on February 3, 2012, for the fifth annual women’s heart health symposium hosted by Northwestern Memorial’s Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute and Heath Learning Centers. Heart disease is the number one killer of women, claiming the lives of over half a million women every year. This special symposium, taking place on National Wear Red Day, will explore the latest life-saving prevention strategies and empower women to lead stronger and longer lives.

From the latest in clinical research to cooking demonstrations and workshops on diet, exercise and stress management, the symposium will offer women smart strategies for protecting their heart. Registration is $30 per person, but sign up with a friend, and it’s only $50 for the two of you. This includes lectures, materials, refreshments and discounted parking.

Women’s Health Research: Clinical Updates:

Teresa K. Woodruff, PhD, director of the Center for Reproductive Research at Northwestern University, will discuss innovationin cardiac research and how it pertains to women and heart disease.

Cook Your Way to a Healthy and Happy Heart:

Robert Kushner, MD, medical director of the Center for Lifestyle Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital will emphasize the importance of following multiple health behaviors to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Holly Herrington, MS, RD, LDN and Erin McCarthy, MS, RD, LDN, will join Dr. Kushner to conduct a food demonstration and focus on tools to use for a healthier diet.

Move to the Beat and Strengthen Your Heart:

Kameswari Maganti, MD, medical director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Northwestern’s Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, will discuss the importance of exercise as it relates to heart health – with a focus on prevention. Lindsey Hanna, MS, exercise physiologist, will also lead an exercise demonstration.

Strategic Stress Management and Wellness Workshop:

Kim Feingold, PhD, director of Cardiac Behavioral Medicine at Northwestern’s Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, will discuss the causes and effects of stress on the heart as well as coping strategies. Her take away and guiding motto is not to sweat the small stuff.
