Women & Stroke
Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability in the United States. More than 100,000 women die from stroke each year (nearly twice the number of women who die from breast cancer), and 1 in 5 women can be expected to have a stroke by age 85.
Despite these figures, it is estimated that, two-thirds of American women are not aware of symptoms of stroke or what to do when a stroke occurs. This is particularly important since most strokes are preventable and their adverse impact can be minimized by prompt attention and proper treatment.
