History

Northwestern Memorial Hospital's reputation as one of the nation's foremost academic medical centers is founded on a long tradition of leadership in patient care, education, research and numerous contributions to improving the quality of healthcare services in Chicago.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital was established by the consolidation of Passavant Memorial and Chicago Wesley Memorial Hospitals, two of Chicago's oldest and most distinguished medical institutions. As the primary teaching facilities for Northwestern University Medical School, the two hospitals shared a neighboring location for 30 years. During the 1960s, planning began for a unified medical center culminating in the formation of Northwestern Memorial Hospital in 1972, underscoring a commitment to excellence that had characterized both hospitals for more than a century.
