The 1966 formation of the McGaw Medical Center at Northwestern University led to joint planning between the university and its member hospitals. Passavant and Wesley responded by merging nursing schools, exchanging staff privileges, and combining clinical areas - culminating in the consolidation of the two hospitals on September 1, 1972. The new Northwestern Memorial Hospital became the largest private hospital in the Midwest with over 700 beds. Other important milestones during the 1970s included the hospital's merger with Prentice Women's Hospital and Maternity Center and the Institute of Psychiatry in 1975, and the opening of the Olson Critical Care Pavilion in 1979. Continued growth of programs and services led to planning for the future of Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
